As a Main Street America™ Accredited Program, we champion downtown revitalization through historic preservation. Our mission is to create a welcoming place where businesses grow, public spaces shine & people feed connected.
The Downtown Waxhaw Association (DWA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization powered by volunteers, fueled by partnerships, and committed to strengthening our sense of place, pride & progress.

Our downtown renewal initiatives are driven by dedicated volunteer groups following the Main Street Approach™.
This proven four-point strategy guides our work and comes to life through three core Action Teams:
Design Team: Help enhance the look & feel of downtown through beautification & preservation
Promo Team: Support business-friendly events, promotions & campaigns
Economic Vitality Team: Help recruit, retain & support downtown businesses with resources & data
Our action teams meet monthly to connect, collaborate & fuel downtown's momentum.
During these meetups, our DWA Board chairs & active volunteers brainstorm ideas, plan upcoming projects & review progress on ongoing initiatives.
The typical time commitment for Downtown Action Team members is 5-7 hours per month.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization and the catalyst for our success. They coordinate events, champion local businesses & spearhead community-changing projects. Their dedication is what turns our visions into reality.
In 2024 alone, they invested over 1,500 hours of their time—a labor of love valued at over $50,000. This is community in action, and there’s room for everyone at the table.

Partners with the Historic Preservation Commission to honor our architectural heritage

Volunteer roles: planting & maintenance, painting and installation projects, historic workshops & more

Organizes shop-local campaigns & business-friendly events like Fright Night & Small Business Saturday
Partners with local businesses and the Town on signature community celebrations
Develops marketing efforts to boost foot traffic, visibility & community pride
Volunteer roles: event coordination, flyer distribution, social media support & merchant outreach

Tracks business openings/closings and foot traffic data to understand market needs
Supports business recruitment, retention & resource-sharing opportunities
Connects entrepreneurs with education, networking & visibility opportunities
Volunteer roles: ribbon cutting assistance, data collection, promoting business resources, and more
